Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group has set-up a new facility inside Aurangabad Central Prison, Maharashtra. The unit will manufacture automotive lock parts within the premises of jail.
The inauguration of the unit was held at Aurangabad Central Prison on 4th November, 2016. The ceremony commenced with unveiling of the foundation stone followed by ribbon cutting of the inventory area by Chief Guest – Mr. Rajendra Dhamle – DIG, Aurangabad Central Prison & Mrs. Sarika Minda, Chairperson – Spark Minda Foundation.
This was followed by a tour of the inventory where Mr. Sachin Patil, Head – Operations, MCL – Aurangabad guided all the guests to understand the machinery and manufacturing processes. After this, Mr. R R More – Superintendent of Police gave a welcome address for all followed by a detailed presentation on this initiative by Mr. Lalitendu Samanta, GCHRO. After Mr. Samanta’s presentation, Mrs. Sarika Minda addressed the gathering. Mrs. Minda thanked all the inmates and the guests from Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL), without whose support this project would not have been possible. Mr. Sudhir Kashyap, CEO, MCL – SSD also shared his words of wisdom with all the inmates and spoke of expanding this unit by engaging more inmates very soon. Mr. Mohite & Mr. Kulkarni from BAL also addressed those who were present and expressed their happiness on being a part of this noble initiative. Towards the end of the program, Mr. Rajendra Dhamle, DIG addressed all the women inmates and encouraged them for putting in their best and making the most of this lucrative opportunity. His enthusiasm and confidence on the inmates instilled a level of confidence and added a lot of motivation to all those present at the gathering.
This activity initiated in collaboration with Aurangabad Central Prison Authority, Maharashtra and aims to impart skills and provide employment to women jail inmates of Aurangabad. The product thus manufactured (Lock Body Assembly Unit) will be used in the final product to be made in our company at Pune and will be supplied to our ‘Principal’ customer Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL). In this regard, an MOU was signed between Aurangabad Central Prison and Minda Corporation Ltd (Security Systems Division) on July 27, 2016.
Under this project, MCL has been allocated 500 Sq. feet of space within the jail premises and this area will be used for all the activities related to manufacturing, production, testing, inspection, storage of finished goods and dispatch. The facility will be run by jail convicts under the supervision of Minda Corporation Ltd., Security and System Division. At the new facility in Aurangabad, Spark Minda will be conducting the induction training program for the jail inmates who will be working in the facility. Further, they will have to go through on-job training and will work under the supervision of Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group representative for a given period of time. These training sessions will help inmates in understanding the minute details of production and manufacturing. With these trainings, inmates will be also given a special training certificate which will help them to work and earn outside the jail authority after their jail term ends.
To ensure the discipline of Jail, the raw material entry and the dispatch of finished product has been kept under our Group’s control for smooth execution of work. To facilitate this entire process, few employees are fully deployed at the Jail; thus smoothing up the complete coordination and assuring Quality process. The management team will also visit this unit on a frequent basis to ensure the system & policy deployment in accordance with the company’s requirement.
In the past, similar initiatives have been taken up by our Group through similar ventures at Tihar Jail, New Delhi in 2014, Yerwada Jail, Pune in 2015, and another one at Dresden Jail, Germany since 2005.

Wiring Harness Assembly Unit Under Business Integrated CSR at Yerwada Central Prison, Pune
Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group inaugurated a new facility at Yerwada Central Prison (YCP), Pune on 27th October, 2015. The unit has been set up to manufacture Wire Harness within the premises of Jail Authority for our esteemed Customer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. This Public – Private Partnership project is a collaborative project between Minda SAI Ltd., Yerwada Central Prison Authority and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. The project started in February 2015, in which Minda SAI Ltd. set up a manufacturing assembly and a production unit for the inmates at YCP. Currently, 30 inmates are engaged in the manufacturing process with the plan of engaging more in future. The Group’s investment at Yerwada Jail included machinery, raw material and other quality systems and procedures as per the policy and the facility will be run by Jail inmates under the supervision of Minda SAI officials. An MOU was signed between Yerwada Jail and Minda SAI on Feb 07, 2015 and production commenced after on job training of the inmates.
Minda Furukawa Electric Pvt. Ltd (MFE), a Joint Venture Company between, Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group of India and Furukawa of Japan has set up an Automotive Component manufacturing unit at Tihar Jail, New Delhi under PPP model for its esteemed Customer ‘Maruti Suzuki India Limited’. The inauguration of the facility was made on 5th September, 2014 by Tihar Jail Management. Under T.J initiative, several Projects are already successfully running inside the Tihar Jail premises. This is the first time in the history of Indian Automotive Industry, that’s an Automotive Component Manufacturing Unit has been set up at Asia’s Largest Jail ‘Tihar Jail’ New Delhi. The T.J management has whole-heartedly supported MFE and Spark Minda, Ashok Minda Group for this socio-business initiative and has provided them an infrastructure on lease in the premises along with other facilities as per norms.
The investments at T.J includes machinery, raw material and other quality systems and procedures as laid down per policy and the facility will be run by Jail convicts under the supervision of MFE. In this manufacturing unit, Wire Harness product, a key Automotive Component, will be manufactured by the Jail convicts and will be supplied to our Key customer Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. An MOU has been signed between MFE and Tihar Jail authorities on 30th March, 2014 The operations commenced from 1st April, 2014 and after successful completion of training to inmates, the production started with daily supply for part sets of 200-250 Wire Harness. The finished product thus goes for final inspection and quality check and is then is transported to the customer in Gurgaon.
As a next step, the Tihar Jail authorities have agreed to facilitate a bigger area for production inside their premises once the production will reach to its full capacity and bigger wire harnesses will come into production.
It took year’s time to conceptualize, envision and install the entire set up here. This social enterprise will provide employment to approximately 200 – 250 convicts. To facilitate this entire process, few employees are fully deployed at the Jail; thus smoothing up the complete coordination and assuring quality process. This initiative, which is one of its own kinds in India’s Automotive Industry, will certainly create an opportunity for the way of life for these convicts, who get employment inside the jail and can also support their families from jail itself through income generation. A dedicated team of MFE trains and imparts skills to them thus catering automobile industry in their own way. These convicts will be able to earn as per the Minimum Wages Act of Government simultaneously, will also contribute for welfare fund for the inmates and a part of their wages will also go to the victim families as well. Hence, once the convict is out of Jail after completing his sentence, he is fully trained for an employment in the Automobile/ Auto-Component Industry, for which he will be given a work experience certificate.
